Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) for Horses

Equine TCVM Acupuncture

Animal brown horse

Acupuncture has been performed on horses for thousands of years. Modern research confirms its beneficial effects in assisting the body with pain relief, tissue healing, immunoregulation, GI motility, and more.

Indications:

  • Wellness & Prevention

  • Performance Enhancement

  • Behavior/Anxiety

  • Musculoskeletal Problems

  • Lameness/Laminitis

  • Tendon/Ligament Injury

  • Neurologic Disorders

  • Gastrointestinal Disorders/Colic

  • Internal Medicine Conditions

  • Quality of LIfe, Cancer, Hospice

  • and more...

The number and frequency of treatments varies with each individual patient

  • 3 to 6  treatments every 1 to 2 weeks is typically recommended to start in order to gauge a response, then monthly or as needed on a case by case basis

  • Acute conditions respond more readily than chronic conditions. Chronic conditions require regular maintenance treatments. The sooner treatment is started the better the response

  • Many patients benefit from tune up treatments every 1 to 3 months for chronic conditions and general wellness and prevention

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Horses

Spices

Note: available for established acupuncture patients only

Chinese Herbal Medicine is one of the four branches of TCVM. It utilizes ingredients from the Materia Medica in blends formulated to treat TCVM Pattern Diagnoses.

Chinese Herbal Selection is based on many factors tailored to each individual patient, such as

  • Tongue and pulse diagnosis

  • TCVM diagnostic scan results

  • Five Element Constitution

  • TCVM Patient Pattern Diagnosis

  • Patient history

  • Current labs results

  • Season/Time of year

  • and more....

Dr. Brown utilizes Chinese Herbal Blends from Jing Tang Herbal with convenient home delivery. Herbal blends for horses are available in a concentrated granular powder that can be easily mixed with feed.

Patients with chronic conditions typically have multiple TCVM Pattern Diagnoses requiring a layered approach to treatment. The herbal prescription may change over time and/or others may be added pending response

Herbal treatment response time and duration of treatment varies with each individual patient,  whether condition(s) being treated is acute vs chronic, number of TCVM patterns being treated, etc. Many herbal blends can be given for up to 3 to 6 months and are typically given 1 to 2 times daily.

A combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine is recommended for optimum results based on the needs of the patient.

TCVM Food Therapy for Horses

Dog in Farm
